The techniques behind every piece.

Each technique in our collection has been practised for centuries across Central Asia. The artisans of Kyzyl-Tuu preserve nearly all known felt-making methods — a depth of knowledge unmatched anywhere else on earth.

01

Felting

One of the oldest textile techniques — wool fibres matted and interlocked through agitation, creating a sturdy natural insulating fabric. Used for yurt covering, cushion filling, and carpets.

02

Shyrdak

Mosaic felt carpet technique — two contrasting felt layers are simultaneously cut and swapped to create interlocking geometric patterns. Each motif carries ancestral meaning.

03

Ala kyiz

Rolled felt with coloured wool pressed into patterns during the felting process. The design emerges as the fibres bond — you cannot draw on felt; you must think in felt.

04

Ala Kiyiz

Rolled felt technique — coloured wool designs are pressed into raw felt during the rolling process, permanently fusing into the fabric. Unlike shyrdak, you cannot draw on ala kiyiz: you must think in felt from the beginning.

05

Termeh

A woven textile technique using wool thread to create intricate repeating patterns. Used for the zabık bash decorative bands that ring the interior and exterior of the yurt at the wall-to-roof junction.
